Italy Part 2, Herculaneum

Off we went to the Herculaneum which would have been much easier to find if Rick Steve told us that in Italian its called Ercolano and that you just have to follow the signs off the freeway to get there. Anyway the Herculaneum was covered in volcano stuff the same time Pompeii was and that's when I stopped listening. You'll have to tune in later to find out why.

Me putting my grubby little hands on something 2000 years old that they just recently dug up. Unlike most of the historical sites in England they let you touch nearly every thing here.

Can you tell where the ruins end and the modern day town begins?
Sean thought this was hilarious. Gotta say those Romans were very body conscious, I'm surprised they didn't invent plastic surgery.

Baths

Sitting in the bath or maybe the gymnasium. I got up as soon as I realised that lots of naked men probably sat there too. grotty.

Sean really liked this swimming pool. Each one of the snakes heads would fill a different part of the swimming pool.
lots of mosaics everywhere it would have been really colourful back before the volcano blew up.

Sean probably could have spent another 5 hours walking around but Laura (mother in law)and I were done. On the way home Jerry decided that he knew how to get back to Sant Angnello via the coast road but ended up taking us to a rather scary part of town and then once we got on the highway he ignored the signs and ended up doing a u-turn on a very busy divided highway. I thought I was going to die. Luckily I didn't because that night I had nutella and caramello gelato. Next time I go to Italy I'm just eating gelato.

  1. OH LA LA!! ITALIANO! you guys are so close and I didn't get a phone call? Seriously.. You guys could have stayed for free and seen some German stuff too. Maybe next time. I expect some visitors, alright? Looks like you saw some great stuff- and I totally laughed when you said you got up fast thinking of all the naked guys sitting there-- HILARIOUS! Can't wait to see the rest of the trip.
